How to begin describing this amazing hotel and its remarkable staff? We traveled to Durham to visit friends, and after reading numerous reviews, we decided to stay at the 40 Winks Hotel. From the moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped in luxury. The hotel’s tasteful, chic interior exudes warmth and elegance. The staff welcomed us with genuine friendliness, and their helpfulness and care immediately set a positive tone for our stay. When we were shown to our room, we were completely overwhelmed by its stunning beauty and the breathtaking view of Durham Cathedral. The room was impeccably clean and equipped with every amenity we needed. The bed was extraordinarily comfortable, and the bathtub positioned in front of the windows was an exquisite touch. We slept like babies that night. Waking up the next morning to a relaxing bath was rejuvenating. The breakfast, expertly prepared by the Chef, was perfect and offered a variety of options to suit any preference. If you ever visit Durham, this is the ideal place to stay. The hotel is just a 10-minute walk from the town center, where you can explore delightful restaurants, bars, the beautiful castle, and the magnificent cathedral. We will be back for sure

We had a perfect and memorable stay for our wedding at 40 Winks - no doubt the best hotel in Durham, including the most beautiful views of the cathedral! George and co couldn't have done more for us to help us prepare for our wedding in town - the Gala room was the perfect place for my wife to get ready, the breakfast was exceptional and the bar/terrace was an ideal place for us to host a pre-wedding get together for our guests. All of the rooms are amazing and our families were very complimentary about the little details. We can't wait to come back for our anniversary!

My wife and I spent two nights at this hotel and were pleasantly surprised with everything about this hotel. The property was stunningly decorated and the management team were amazing! Thank you George and your team for an amazing couple of nights at your hotel! The breakfast was also a five star treat, from the traditional English Breakfast to the Duck Confit and waffle with a duck egg and orange infused syrup (you have to try this!!!) Make sure to add the breakfast to your reservation because you surely don't want to miss it!

Spent 4 nights over new year - super views, lovey cosy, friendly, boutique hotel. Lots of space. Made to feel very much at home. Breakfast was excellent.

Stepping through the door of 40 Winks in Durham felt like leaving the ordinary world behind. My visit was instantly elevated by the most genuinely warm welcome I’ve ever received; the staff, who remained friendly and attentive throughout my stay, made me feel instantly at home. The location is utterly perfect. Tucked just across the river, it's a peaceful sanctuary, yet a short walk from the heart of the city. My room, one of the individually designed en-suites, was spectacular. I spent a good amount of time simply gazing out of the bay window, which framed a magnificent, uninterrupted view of the cathedral—a truly iconic Durham vista to wake up to. What truly sets 40 Winks apart is its eclectic style. Every corner of the Grade II-listed Victorian townhouse bursts with character, from whimsical bird-themed wallpaper to striking light fixtures and sumptuous fabrics. It’s boutique luxury with a playful, utterly unique twist that avoids feeling stuffy or generic. And then there was the food. The great breakfast was the perfect start to a day of exploring. Forget your standard fare; this was a feast of high-quality, local ingredients, cooked perfectly to order. Whether you choose the full English or something lighter, the attention to detail is evident. 40 Winks isn't just a guesthouse; it’s an experience. It offers a stylish, sophisticated, and deeply comfortable stay that encapsulates the unique charm of Durham. It’s somewhere I would recommend without a moment's hesitation—I certainly slept for forty winks, and then some (pun genuinely intended ).

This place is a hidden Gem Breakfast AMAZING! They go above and beyond for your stay here. The rooms and hotel are a work of art in its own, we are coming again very soon as it’s so comfortable. The view of Durham cathedral are astonishing! Can’t wait to return again new favourite place

The rooms and really good, clean and regal. Huge windows and depending on which room you take you get a view of the castle as well. They welcomed us with chocolates and have a great selection of breakfast options in the morning. The place is just a 10 min walk from the cathedral and 5 min walk from the town center where you’ll find all the restaurants and things to do. Everything provided is top quality and it felt great to stay here
